Southampton travelled to the island to face Ventnor for the Joined at the Hip trophy and came away with the victory in what descended into something of a scrappy game.
The home side took an early lead through a penalty but Southampton hit back with a try from Tom Laycock. Gus Nye picked and drove from the back of a rick and found Laycock in support, who exploited some weak tackling to run in for the try. Tom Humphrey added the conversion for a 3-7 lead.
They extended the lead as Alec Grey put a kick over the top, which forward-turned-winger Munter chased well. He stripped the ball off the catcher and dived over the line for Southampton's second try. Again Humphrey converted giving Saints a 3-14 lead, which is how the scoreboard looked at half time.
Ventnor opened the scoring in the second half with an unconverted try of their own, reducing Southamptons lead to 8-14.
The restart was dropped by Ventnor giving skipper Jordan Dashwood the chance to attack down the blind side. He found winger Chris Alston in support, who ran in to score from outside the 22. The conversion was missed but Southampton had something of a buffer again at 8-19.
Things then started to unravel for Southampton. Frustration grew after a series of questionable refereeing decisions and after a series of infringements from the visitors Tom Laycock was on the wrong end of a team yellow card after coming in at the side.
After a disagreement about line out jumping styles, Jack Leadbitter then found himself in an altercation with a Ventnor forward who wanted some hands-on experience of the Leadbitter family jewels. Jack retaliated and the ref sent both players to the sin bin.
But despite the lack of discipline that marred the end of the game, Southampton had already done enough as Ventnor couldn't find another try. They will have to settle for a losing bonus point whilst Southampton took the win - and the Joined at the Hip trophy.
Chris Alston took the Man of the Match award whilst Ian Budd was Dick of the Day after falling over at a bus stop in front of a group of girls.
Two wins out of two on the island for Southampton 1s and 2s guaranteed a lively journey back across the Solent and a big night out back on dry land.
